Secret deportation hearings upheld

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2002

A federal appeals court on Tuesday upheld the right of the federal government to hold secret deportation hearings.

In a split 2-1 decision, the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals said the closed hearings are necessary in light of the war on terrorism. The ruling reversed a federal judge on the issue.

On the other hand, the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals has said the hearings must be kept public. Some legal analysts believe the Supreme Court will be asked to consider the issue and resolve the difference.
