Bush in speech cites Iraqi threat

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2002 President Bush made a speech to a group of citizens on Monday night to lay out the basis for a potential attack on Iraq and Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. Bush cited years of non-compliance with United Nations resolutions against of chemical and biological weapons. He said Saddam wants to build a nuclear device and has long-range weapons capable of striking nearby nations. Congress is moving to approve a resolution that grants Bush authority to attack Iraq. There are critics among Democrats and public support isn't as high as it used to be. But top Republicans said they would drop efforts to change the resolution. Bush's speech was not carried by any major networks. White House spokesperson Ari Fleischer did not request coverage because he said the Bush administration didn't want to seem as if it were announcing war plans. Get the Story:
