Alexie portrays Indians as people

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2002 Author and filmmaker Sherman Alexie doesn't feel he has a "special mission toward Indians" except to portray them as human beings, he says in an interview for Sojourners. Alexie's new film "The Business of Fancydancing" focuses on the return of a poet, who is gay, to the Spokane Reservation. Other characters include his white companion, a half-Jewish, half-Spokane woman who grew up off the reservation and the poet's old friend. "All the characters are looking for some ideal of identity that doesn't exist," Alexie says. Get the Story:
