Editorial: Inouye loses credibility

MONDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2002 The New London Day is going after Senator Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii), chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, for remarks he made against a moratorium on federal recognition. The paper claims Inouye made conflict arguments on the Senate floor during a debate on the issue. Inouye said the process should not be delayed, agreed it need changes but also said there were no political improprieties. "Surely the process could not be both 'a scandal at this time,' and 'steeped in integrity,'" the editorial states, referring to some of Inouye's statements. Inouye was referring to charges that Clinton administration officials recognized tribes as political favors. Neither the General Accounting Office nor the Department of Interior's inspector general has documented such evidence. Critics of recognition and The Day in its editorials often equate problems in handling recognition with alleged political influence. Get the Story:
