A new study by an environmental group shows that Alaska Natives who live near a decommissioned military base have nearly 10 times as many toxic chemicals in their blood as average Americans.

Alaska Community Action on Toxics worked with Native leaders to put together the report. Villagers from Gambell and Savoonga were tested and showed high levels of PCBs, which are cancer-causing chemicals.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to spend $58 million over 18 years to clean up the former Northeast Cape military base.
