Seminole tribal members protest BIA

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2002

A group of Seminole Nation tribal members held a protest on Tuesday against the Bureau of Indian Affairs' resistance to recognize their elected leaders.

About 45 tribal members protested outside the BIA agency in Wewoka, Oklahoma, The Shawnee News-Star reported. They want principal chief Jerry Haney ousted but a federal judge last week said the BIA can recognize his leadership.

Ken Chambers was elected to replace Haney. A new set of elected council members is also being disputed by the BIA.
