Salish totem pole to be auctioned

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2002 A 36-foot Salish totem pole will be auctioned in Washington because of a controversy involving a tribal member. Doug Tobin, a member of the Squaxin Island Tribe, was awarded a $66,000 contract to oversee the carving of the pole. Tobin has a criminal history and has since been implicated in a poaching scandal. The Port of Olympia seeks a minimum bid of $60,000. The money will be used for a new totem pole. Get the Story:
