Lone Democrat keeps up regulation fight

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2002

There is just one Democrat on the Federal Communications Commission and he feels lonely sometimes.

That's because commissioner Michael J. Copps holds views that aren't popular under Republican control. The digital divide, affirmative action and federal regulation are some of the topics where he dissents from the GOP majority.

Included is a recent dissent regarding the FCC's role in a state-tribal dispute over telephone exchanges. Copps was the only commissioner to push for federal supremacy over South Dakota's battle with the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe.

Copps spoke recently at the Bureau of Indian Affairs' economic development summit.
