FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2002

A Kansas county commission endorsed plans for a highway expansion that runs through land considered sacred to Haskell Indian Nations University.

Emotions were high at a meeting on the subject, The Lawrence Journal-World reports. Commissioner Charles Jones accused his colleagues and a state attorney of being racist towards American Indians.

"These people have suffered enough," Jones said, according to the paper. "It's time for us to leave them alone."

"I think you are the poster boy for bigotry," Jones told the state lawyer.

Haskell officials, students and alumni oppose an option that affects wetlands near the school. Environmentalists support the Haskell community.
