Department of Justice prosecutors "mistakenly" gave 48 classified documents to the only person charged in connection with the September 11 terrorist attacks, The New York Times reports today.

Attorney General John Ashcroft has launched in an internal investigation in response to the enormous breach of trust. A federal judge overseeing the case ordered the information retrieved after she discovered the mishap.

DOJ officials, speaking to The Times under the condition of anonymity, said Zacarias Moussaoui probably never read the documents, which are summaries of interviews related to his case.
