Gaming has poured more than $1.2 billion into the pockets of tribes in Washington since 1996, The Seattle Times reports.

The revenues were accompanied by a 16 percent increase in Native American income in the state, based on figures from the Census 2000. But Indians still are the poorest racial or ethnic group.

Gaming also has not benefited every tribe. Some are located too far from urban centers to take advantage.

Tribes with casinos are facing new challenges too. They plan to fight a proposal to tax their revenues.
