Letter: 'De-recognize' Pequot Tribe

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2002 "The Day's Sept. 11 article “U.S. senators propose halting BIA recognition” shows the total disingenuousness of U.S. Sen. Christopher Dodd. On the one hand, he wants to reform the acknowledgment process until the Bureau of Indian Affairs can ensure that tribes meet each of seven criteria for recognition and the public has more opportunity to take part in the process. On the other hand, Sen. Dodd says, “I would vehemently oppose any effort to de-recognize any Indian tribe that is federally recognized.” If Sen. Dodd is going to try and do the right thing, why not correct all the “mistakes”?" Get the Story:
