Conn. lawmakers deny tribal influence

Two critics of the Bureau of Indian Affairs deny that money influences their decisions despite accusing the troubled agency of the same.

Sens. Chris Dodd and Joe Lieberman, both Democrats, want to halt all federal recognition decisions until the system is "reformed." They claim the process is tainted by casino and tribal donations although they have received money from those interests.

It all might not matter that much, since Dodd and Lieberman were forced to withdraw their amendment, to the Department of Interior's budget bill, last Friday. A compromise with the Senate Indian Affairs Committee is being worked out.
