TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2002

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee will hold a hearing next week on federal recognition.

Invited witnesses include Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb, Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal and representatives of towns in Connecticut that have been critical of the recognition process.

The hearing is part of a series and will focus on the criteria used to make recognition decisions. A prior one in June looked at the system in general.

McCaleb last year promised a report on recognition but as of late June, it was not finished.
