WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2002

The Minnesota Green Party's endorsed candidate for governor candidate has renounced endorsed U.S. Senate candidate Ed McGaa, an Oglala Sioux tribal member.

McGaa is being criticized for his involvement in a proposed ash dumping project on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. The ash was sewage waste refuge.

The deal never finalized and the waste had to be buried. But the media has dug up the 1980s debacle.

McGaa says in The St. Paul Pioneer Press story that he was "simply an employee" of the company that transporting the waste. He goes on to say: "Why now do people try to blame this on an Indian who had no decision-making powers?"

McGaa dismisses the original news story by The Minneapolis Star Tribune as "a sign of poor journalism and arrogant politics." On his website, he writes: "[I] believe the ash is quite harmless from an external point of view and I am pleased that it is now no longer available for human internal consumption".
