Mud is frequently hurled in political campaigns, but this time it's old sewage being thrown in front of Ed McGaa, a candidate for U.S. Senate in Minnesota.

McGaa is the Green Party's endorsed candidate. Critics say his past wasn't all that environmental friendly.

He is being blamed for a failed plan to extract gold and other metals from sewage ash. He was employed by a Minnesota company that wanted to get rid of the waste.

The plan involved transporting the ash to the Pine Ridge Reservation, where it would be processed. But the tribe never approved, citing questions about the waste.

McGaa was only an employee of the company involved but critics put him in charge of the entire affair.
