Ariz. tribe still recovering from fire

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2002

The largest fire in Arizona history burnt 300,000 acres of the Fort Apache Reservation, home to the White Mountain Apache Tribe.

The Rodeo-Chedeski Fire, named for two separate human-caused blazes that merged, has devastated the tribe's economy. About 800 million board feet of timber, a key tribal asset, were burnt and the tribe's casino was shut down.

The tribe is selling the logs to private companies, a first in its history. Tribal members who were employed at the tribe's timber business are now out of work.
