With 60 percent of the precincts reporting, Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska) was well ahead of his GOP challengers in Alaska's primary for governor.

Murkowski had 69 percent of the vote. Wayne Ross was his closest competitor, trailing at 28 percent.

On the Democrat side, Lt. Gov. Fran Ulmer had an overwhelming 93 percent of the vote with 60 precincts reporting. Ulmer hopes to be the state's first female governor.

Murkowski and Ulmer are running to replace Gov. Tony Knowles, a Democrat who is barred by term limits to seek a third term.

Knowles drew the ire of state GOPs by refusing to challenge the landmark Alaska Native subsistence decision won by elder Katie John. He declined to appeal the case to the Supreme Court.
