TUESDAY, AUGUST 27, 2002

Members of the Lummi Nation of Washington are making a cross-country journey to commemorate the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Tribal members are bringing a 13-foot cedar healing pole from Washington to New York. The pole is meant to remember the children who died in the tragedy.

The pole made an impromptu stop on the Crow Reservation in Montana on Monday, where the tribe was asked to offer a blessing. But Crow culture forbids prayers for the dead.

The pole heads to Rapid City, South Dakota, today for a ceremony with Sioux tribes.
