Tribal court jurisdiction upheld

Alaska Native tribal courts have shared jurisdiction over child custody cases, a federal judge ruled.

U.S. District Judge Russel Holland on August 20 said the village of Northway is a federally recognized tribe. He returned a child welfare case to the village's court.

The father of two boys opposes the tribe's involvement.
