A former Bureau of Indian Affairs employee who pleaded guilty to killing four people in an alcohol-related accident in New Mexico plans to appeal his 20-year prison sentence.

The public defender for Lloyd Larson said the sentence was outside normal guidelines. "I think the problem is we just were blindsided," Alonzo Padilla said, according to the Associated Press.

Larson was driving a BIA vehicle when he killed two Nebraska couples on January 25. His blood-alcohol level was more than twice legal limit in New Mexico.

Larson, a member of the Navajo Nation, in a court statement said he deeply regretted the accident.
