Editorial: It's 'simple' to consult with tribes

FRIDAY, AUGUST 23, 2002

The Sioux Falls Argus Leader in an editorial today promotes consultation with tribes on burial sites.

The paper cites a recent case in Kansas where a number of tribes were notified about remains discovered at a lake. It contrasts this with the state of South Dakota's handling of a similar case.

"Don't go off half-cocked, as federal and state officials did recently," the paper writes, "and haul everything away without talking to tribes."

In that case, a federal judge found that the state and Army Corps of Engineers violated law by not informing the Yankton Sioux Tribe of remains and artifacts found near the Missouri River.
