Thousands march for Native sovereignty

FRIDAY, AUGUST 23, 2002 An estimated 2,500 turned out for the fifth annual "We the People" march for Alaska Native sovereignty on Thursday. The Anchorage march featured representatives of Alaska Natives throughout the state. They were joined by American Indians and supporters from the lower 48. The march was started by a Native American Rights Fund attorney in response to a Supreme Court decision which limited Native sovereignty over certain lands. It focuses on issues such as subsistence and the government-to-government relationship. Get the Story:
