WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21, 2002

Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) plans to introduce a bill to streamline the sale of timber on lands devastated by the Rodeo-Chediski Fire.

The fire destroyed more than half of the Fort Apache Reservation. The White Mountain Apache Tribe depends on timber sales for its economy and lost $152 million, according to the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The bill will apply to sales on the reservation and to sales in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests.

President Bush and Secretary of Interior Gale Norton will be in Oregon Thursday to propose streamlining environmental regulations affecting the thinning of forests. Norton told The Denver Post that the changes are a "fundamental shift" in forest policy.
