Members of the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe of South Dakota are asking Congress to place their debt-ridden tribal government into receivership.

The Lakes of the Brave Project is circulating a petition that asks for a six-year receiver. The group wants Congress to authorize a seven-member caretaker government to bring the tribe out of a $31 million debt.

Former chairman Vernon Ashley is among those leading the effort, which the current tribal council opposes. The Bureau of Indian Affairs doesn't want to take over tribal programs.
