Sioux tribal members push for receiver

MONDAY, AUGUST 19, 2002 Members of the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe of South Dakota are asking Congress to place their debt-ridden tribal government into receivership. The Lakes of the Brave Project is circulating a petition that asks for a six-year receiver. The group wants Congress to authorize a seven-member caretaker government to bring the tribe out of a $31 million debt. Former chairman Vernon Ashley is among those leading the effort, which the current tribal council opposes. The Bureau of Indian Affairs doesn't want to take over tribal programs. Get the Story:
