A funeral service was held on Friday for Glenn Godfrey, the first Alaska Native to reach the highest ranks of the Alaska state police.

A reported 1,000 turned out for the service, which was held in Anchorage. Godfrey was remembered for breaking barriers during his long public service career.

Godfrey was the first Alaska Native to head the State Troopers. He then became the first state commissioner of public safety, retiring from the post this past summer to work for an Alaska Native corporation.
