FRIDAY, AUGUST 9, 2002

A deal to preserve a key part of the Sand Creek massacre site in Colorado hasn't been approved by the Oklahoma tribes who are supposed to receive the land.

Cheyenne and Arapaho tribal business committee chairman James Pedro said tribal officials haven't met since April. He said there is concern over the involvement of the casino company that agreed to buy the land for $1.5 million.

Army soldiers massacred 163 tribal members, mostly women, children and elders, at the site in 1864.
