A land conservation bill pushed by Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) establishes a conservation area in Nevada that includes Indian petroglpyhs.

The bill creates the Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area on outskirts of Las Vegas. It also designates of 444,000 acres as wilderness and calls for study on an additional 231,000 acres.

A source of dispute is whether the acreage will affect an area known as Gold Butte. The Moapa Paiute Tribe wants to ensure the land will be protected because it includes petroglpyhs and medicinal plants.

But the House version would prevent that, according to a conservationist. A spokesperson for Rep. Jim Gibbons (R-Nev.) said the bill won't hamper protections.
