The Lincoln Journal Star in an editorial today criticizes Nebraska lawmakers for killing a proposal to allow tribal gaming.

"At the very least it would provide needed jobs and income for Natives, as well as providing more state control," the paper says of the proposed constitutional amendment.

The paper says voters will now be offered a bad choice: between the existing situation, where local money often gets siphoned off to states where gaming is allowed, and video slots -- "the crack cocaine of gambling."

The paper refers to a ballot initiative which would authorize video slot machines in bars, restaurants, race tracks and keno parlors throughout the state.
