Tribes urged to settle water disputes

THURSDAY, AUGUST 8, 2002 A Department of Interior official is urging tribes to settle their outstanding water claims. Assistant Secretary for Water and Science Bennett Raley said federal water projects often depend on tribal claims. He said the sooner the issues are resolved, the quicker funds can be approved. Raley was speaking at a conference in New Mexico. The Farmington Daily-Times in an editorial urges water users to look beyond the region because "water is more than just a local issue."
