Editorial: Sacred sites bill a 'good start'

FRIDAY, AUGUST 2, 2002 The Sioux Falls Leader in an editorial today praises a bill that seeks to increase protection of sacred sites. "A bill before the U.S. House would not solve all problems with sacred Native American sites, but it would be a good start," the paper writes. The bill is the initiative of Rep. Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.), the ranking member of the House Resources Committee. It would codify into a law an executive order on sacred sites to compel federal consultation on sacred sites. The bill would also allow tribes to ask federal lands to be exempt from development. Get the Story:
