FRIDAY, AUGUST 2, 2002

Pope John Paul II wrapped up his three-country, 11-day trip to the Americas on Thursday.

His final stop was in Mexico, where he canonized the first Indian saint and urged justice for Indian rights. The Mexican constitution, for the first time, recognizes the nation's 12 million Indians but Native leaders don't believe the provisions go far enough.

The Pope yesterday participated in what is described as a Mazateca cleansing ceremony. He beatified to Zapotec Indian men who were killed after reporting that Indian ceremonies were taking place against Catholic Church edicts.
