A group claiming sovereign tribal status has been told to pay $19,000 in fines for trying to ignore the authority of a Connecticut city.

The Mohegan Tribe and Nation Inc., Confederation of the Mohegan-Pequot American Indian Nation and Affiliated Tribes, owes the money for various zoning, housing and related violations. Chief Moigu Standing Bear claims he is a hereditary Mohegan chief.
