The conviction of an American for aiding a terrorist group in Peru could be overturned by an international court.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, the legal arm of the Organization of American States, is considering Lori Berenson's case. A referral to the Inter-American Court, which can force Peru to comply with a ruling, could change the conviction for the former Massachusetts Institute of Technology student.

Berenson was convicted of aiding the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement in a failed plot to take over Peru's Congress. The movement is named for an Indian leader who was executed for arising against the Spanish in the 1700s.
