Critics: Bush duped Utah on nuclear deal

MONDAY, JULY 15, 2002

The Bush administration's pledge to scuttle a nuclear waste facility on a Utah reservation was a ruse, supporters and opponents of the Skull Valley Goshute Tribe charge.

According to Utah Sens. Orrin Hatch and Bob Bennett, Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham agreed to derail the tribe's plan. In turn, they voted for the Yucca Mountain waste dump in Nevada.

But Abraham's pledge doesn't apply to a private facility, both sides of the debate say.
