Peru's disgraced former intelligence minister, Vladimiro Montesinos, was sentenced to more than nine years in prison and fined $2.8 million on Monday.

Montesinos was convicted on one count of abuse of power. The charge is just one of 60 he faces for what federal prosecutors call a reign of terror during the administration of ousted President Alberto Fujimori.

Fujimori fled the country to his ancestral Japan amid a national scandal involving Montesinos. Montesinos alleges he has incriminating evidence against Fujimori.
