Ariz. tribe shocked by fire charges

MONDAY, JULY 1, 2002 White Mountain Apache tribal chairman Dallas Massey and residents of the Arizona reservation expressed shock over charges brought in the massive Rodeo-Chediski Fire. Leonard Gregg lives on the reservation near where the Rodeo Fire began on June 18. He was among the first to respond. The fire's origins on tribal land brought aspersions on the Apache community by non-Indians. According to the Associated Press, former tribal chairman Ronnie Lupe said Gregg is a tribal member who was given up for adoption by his parents. Get the Story:
