School pledge ruled unconstitutional

THURSDAY, JUNE 27, 2002 A federal appeals court on Wednesday ruled the Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional. In a 2-1 decision, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals said the pledge, recited by school students, violated the separation of church and state clause of the U.S. Constitution. The use of the words "under God" was cited as a deciding factor. Lawmakers called the decision ridiculous and plan to fight it Get the Story:
