THURSDAY, JUNE 13, 2002 The Environmental Protection Agency in April warned the Mescalero Apache Nation of New Mexico that it was violating the Clean Water Act. The EPA cited discharges from three settling ponds and a sewer collection system. Pollution was entering a river, the tribe was told. Samples the state and the Indian Health Service took however did not report any problems. The tribe admits the ponds are overtaxed and wants to build its first sewage treatment plant with the help of a $1.7 million federal grant and a $377,000 loan from the Department of Agriculture.
