A public-private coalition that includes tribes is working on a new research center to house thousands of artifacts at the Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado.

The items are currently housed in a shed, leaving them prone to the elements, especially fire. Sen. Ben Nighthose Campbell (R-Colo.) has introduced a bill to forge a partnership with the National Park Service, tribes and private groups to build a new storage facility.

The bill doesn't provide federal funds. The Mesa Verde Foundation would funnel money to the project.
