FRIDAY, JUNE 7, 2002

The Yankton Sioux Tribe of South Dakota is in federal court today to ask a judge to stop work at a site where state workers uncovered and removed tribal ancestors.

State workers at an Army Corps of Engineers site uncovered the remains but didn't consult tribes until after they were removed. The Yankton Sioux Tribe wants the bones repatriated immediately.

The tribe also wants tribal members to have access to the site. An attorney says the Army Corps was told about burials in the area.
