Fish habitat affects Pueblos

FRIDAY, JUNE 7, 2002

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, an agency of the Department of Interior, will be holding consultation sessions in New Mexico to discuss a proposed critical habitat for the endangered silvery minnow.

Tribes are invited because the plan passes through Pueblo land. Starting at Cochiti Pueblo, 45 miles of the 200-mile proposed designation affect a total of six Pueblos.

A session is being held at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque on June 26.

The Department of Interior raised the idea of draining a lake at Cochiti Pueblo to ensure water for the fish. Tribal leaders vehemently objected and the state's U.S. Senators said they would kill any funding.
