Native corp moves towards casino nod

FRIDAY, JUNE 7, 2002 An Alaska Native corporation is closer to being able to distribute profits from a proposed Nevada casino to shareholders. The Nevada Gaming Control Board on Wednesday voted 3-0 to allow Cook Inlet Region Inc., a regional corporation chartered under federal law, to share profits without requiring background and other checks for every single shareholder. Only CIRI directors and officials will undergo the checks. State law would otherwise require a full inquiry of all 7,000 CIRI shareholders and exclude profits from those with criminal records. But federal law prohibits unequal treatment of shareholders. The issue now goes to the Nevada Gaming Commission. Get the Story:
