The FBI on Wednesday said it has traced the origins of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III said the idea came from Osama bin Laden's group in Afghanistan while planning occured in Germany. Funding is traced to the United Arab Emirates through Afghanistan.

The FBI also believes a relative of the person who planned the 1993 World Trade Center bombing played a key role in the attacks. The suspect is Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, a Kuwaiti man at large.

In related news, the Senate Judiciary Committee today is holding a public hearing with the FBI agent who criticized her superior for their handling of a terrorist suspect detained prior to the attacks. Coleen Rowley met privately with staff members yesterday in advance of her public testimony.

A joint House-Senate committee on the attacks also continues to look into information supplied by both the FBI and the CIA. Lawmakers are concerned about an internal probe that discussed why FBI superiors rejected a proposal to canvass flight security schools when they knew of a potential airplane hijacking threat.
