TUESDAY, JUNE 4, 2002

Wanting to know which tribes, and their friends (or enemies as the case may be), are vying for a chance to open one of three casinos in the Catskills region of New York?

Steve Israel of The Middletown Times Herald-Record has a run-down for you. In his "Casino Confidential" column, he gives a snapshot of the major players and opines on the chances of success.

In particular, he says look out for powerhouse Oneida Nation. A settlement of its land claim could include a casino.

But don't bet on the Modoc Tribe of Oklahoma, he says. Bad partners and unfavorable policy put this tribe out of the running.
