Bush coal decision decried

THURSDAY, MAY 23, 2002

A member of a federal energy advisory panel quit after President Bush reversed a campaign pledge on the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.

Documents released by the Department of Energy in response to a lawsuit show that Jane Hughes Turnbull left her post on the National Coal Council three days after the promise was dropped. In a March 16, 2001, memo she accused the coal industry of pressuring Bush.

Last year, The Washington Post reported that Peabody Coal was one of several industry interests which lobbied against limiting emissions from coal-burning plants.

Environmental groups sued to obtain documents related to Bush's national energy policy.
