Teacher criticizes Navajo Nation

MONDAY, MAY 20, 2002 A teacher on the Navajo Reservation and a candidate for president say the tribe isn't doing enough to support the education of its children. LeVina Serrano said the only way education will be a priority is for the tribe to take responsibility. "Culture is great but it doesn't get you a high-paying job," the teacher told The Farmington Daily-Times. Presidential candidate Joe Shirley Jr. said the schools on the reservation need to improve. "The Navajo Nation needs to think leadership," he told the paper. "There's no reason for students to be left behind." Get the Story:
