N.Y. land settlement talks urged

THURSDAY, MAY 16, 2002

A federal government attorney is urging the state of New York to negotiate a land claim settlement with the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans.

But Gov. George Pataki (R), with support from New York tribal leaders, has balked at talking with out-of-state tribes. The Mohican band was based in New York until it was removed to Wisconsin.

The tribe's land claim is tied to the Oneida Nation's although both are separate lawsuits. The tribe has asked a federal judge to appoint the same mediator to handle both cases.
