An ancient Modoc village and burial site has been desecrated at the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon.

The refuge didn't notice the disturbance, however, until a local paper contacted the sheriff's department. A reporter from the Klamath Falls Herald and News on Sunday found the discarded bones of a Modoc adult.

Artifacts were also disturbed. The refuge manager believes it could be tied to drilling which occurred near the site last winter.

"There are some things we can explain, but there are some things where we are compromised," manager Phil Norton told the paper.
