An attorney for the Duwamish Tribe of Washington says a lawsuit is probably the next step in the fight for federal recognition.

The tribe hasn't made a decision on which avenue to pursue. But attorney Dennis Whittlesey said Congressional recognition probably won't come until court avenues are exhausted.

Whittlesey has worked for several Pacific Northwest tribes whose federal recognition has been challenged. He represented the Cowlitz Tribe, whose recognition was affirmed by Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb earlier this year, and the Chinook Nation, whose status is on hold pending further review.
